Houses on the water
Oceanfront on Bonaire does not mean a beach. It means the reef starts at the end of your own terrace.
7 houses
Bonaire has almost no sand on its west coast. What it has instead is ironshore: a flat shelf of old coral that runs to the edge of the water and then drops away. That is why nearly every house here has steps or a short ladder into the sea rather than a stretch of beach, and why you can be over the reef a minute after leaving the terrace.
If you want to walk into shallow water with small children, one of these houses has its own sand. The rest suit people who want the water deep enough to swim and snorkel from the moment they are in it.
The wind comes from the east, across the island, so the west coast stays calm nearly every day of the year. That is the reason the diving here is done from shore and not from a boat.
